Doris McCarthy Icebergs

4th Grade has been studying the art of Canadian artist Doris McCarthy. We learnt of her connection to the rugged landscape of northern Canada, her love of Inuit culture, and her importance in the Canadian art world.

We discussed how the arctic is in danger as a result of global warming and of the importance of recognizing the beauty of these barren lands. We also looked at the phenomenon of the aurora borealis that feature in many of her paintings. We painted our background landscapes with watercolor then cut out icebergs from card stock. Last, we added reflections in the water with pastels. These turned out great!
